Psychotherapy for Depression and PTSD

"Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly..."

Have you noticed that life has become a struggle? Have you recently gone through a break up or death of a loved one? Are you dealing with a chronic illness that is making you feel like you are living in a fish bowl-life outside is going on, but you are alone, and left behind. Have you recently had a baby and noticed that the “baby blues” aren’t going away and you aren’t feeling the way your friends with new babies are feeling? Depression comes in many different shapes and sizes. It can happen suddenly, with a loss,or it can have been slowly building up for years and you have just learned to live with it.

Well depression is not something you have to just survive. There is a way to fight it and win! I’m here to help you.

If you are at this page you want to know what am I specifically going to do to make you feel better that is different than all the other therapists in the Denver area .First, I want you to know that there are a lot of good therapists in Colorado. It’s about fit. You can have a great therapist but if s/he doesn’t connect with you,you won’t feel comfortable with them and you won’t get better. I have spent 22 years working with predominately women and adolescents who struggling with depression. I do a lot more than just ask ” how does that make you feel.” I utilize many creative therapies-including art therapy (drawing, using clay, coloring), using drama therapy, I give a lot of homework (as the video on the first page discusses), I have you journal, try “bibliotherapy”(I may give you articles or books to read that have to do with your specific situation). I was a hypnotherapist for 10 years before graduate school so I combine hypnosis -mindfulness -meditation to help you relax, sleep and eat better, decrease anxiety and decrease depression.I also utilize other therapies to help you get to how you FEEL, release it and get back to living your life. I don’t plan on having you seeing me every week for years. I want you LIVING your life not “seeing Dr Karen” forever.

I understand that being depressed can be overwhelming and you never know how you will feel each day. Some day you may not be able to sleep, the next you don’t want to get out of bed all day. When depression hits you suddenly, regardless of the “why” it feels scary and overwhelming. So my job is to help you get in touch with your feelings so we can find out what is going on, and get you feeling better. Everyone is different. So my treatment plan for you is different than the person I saw the day before you. It is all individualized, based on what you are feeling, what your history is, and what you are willing to work on, and at your speed.

Many of you may be wondering whether you are depressed so I’d like you to watch a short video called The Black Dog, from the World Health Organization, which explains a bit about depression and how to know if you are depressed. Then I’ll discuss the specific symptoms of Clinical Depression.

When people come to see me sometimes they are aware that they are depressed, other times they are experiencing symptoms that they don’t immediately associate with Clinical Depression. You may be feeling bummed out, sad, or having symptoms that you don’t associate with Depression such as over eating, problems sleeping through the night, wanting to just hang out on the couch or bed, with a blanket over your head. Most things that you used to love seem uninteresting. Here are some other specific symptoms. Some people experience many of these, others only a few. How many are you experiencing?

  • Depressed Mood
  • Insomnia or Hypersomnia (sleeping more than usual)
  • Feelings of Sadness, Crying often or easily
  • Decreased Libido (Sex Drive)
  • Loss of Energy
  • Problems Concentrating
  • Feelings of Worthlessness or Guilt
  • Physical Aches and Pain for no physical reason
  • Suicidal Ideation (thoughts of death or suicide, with or without a plan)
  • Irritability
  • Loss of interest in things that used to give you pleasure

If you are reading this you are probably experiencing a lot of emotional pain. You may be frightened, angry, or confused. If you recognize more than 4 of those symptoms  the “Black Dog” may have landed in your life. If that is the case you are probably feeling overwhelmed, scared to call anyone, and are afraid  you may never feel better again. Some people are just scared to admit they feel blue because they feel that people will think they are “crazy” or “sick.” Please understand that this is all I do every day is help people who are having a rough time at home, work, in their relationships. I know you are afraid that your “secret” is horrible, but I’ve heard many secrets over 22 years. And I may have even heard yours from someone else.

If this sounds familiar you will want to call me at (720)878.8891 and I am willing to GIVE YOU A FREE 1 HOUR CONSULTATION  on the phone( Facetime or Skype are also options but call directly first and we can arrange a specific time to meet on Skype for your consultation to answer your questions) for free so you can tell me your story at a comfortable pace. You will be able to ask me any questions you have and we can get into the specifics of what I might be able to do for you. If after we chat either of us feels that we aren’t a good fit, I am happy to help you try to find someone else that might be better for you.

My goal is that when we finish you don’t have to pretend that everything in your life is working.  You no longer have to hold back the tears, or drag yourself to work or to your child’s activities. You will go back to participating fully in life. No, every day won’t be perfect, but you will have the skills to make the right choices so you feel stronger ,healthier and happier.

Call right now, and you are one day closer to feeling better physically and emotionally! You no longer need to be haunted by your Black Dog. I know it’s easier to just keep hoping that things will get better. But the sooner you call, the sooner you can start to feel healthy and more in control. I look forward to meeting you for our FREE CONSULTATION!
